2014 – A Look Back

Here we are just two weeks away from the end of another year. June 2015 will mark the fourth year of this blog and one of the things I’ve been doing lately is looking back. To make this easier I have pulled all of my blog posts into a Scrivener project, dividing them by year and month. I was immediately amazed by the word count, over 125,000 words since June 2011 and when exported to a ebook, it is over 450 pages long. Those were interesting statistics but I was more interested in reading what I wrote back in 2011. I started reading the posts as if they were a book and while I’m still reading there are a few things that really stood out. My topics jumped around a lot, I lack focus when not writing about a specific project. As well, my spelling and grammar really needs some work. One article that caught my attention was one that I wrote on December 4, 2013 called 2014 is Coming. In the article I layout a plan for 2014. I’ve copied the plan points from that article below.

–          Bi-monthly Blog Posting (24 posts in 2014)
–          Write a brand new screenplay from scratch (Jan – Sept)
–          Prepare (research) for NaNoWriMo (Oct)
–          Write 50,000 words for NaNoWriMo 2014 (Nov)
–          Write a holiday-based short story (Dec)

Looking back at the year 2014 I wrote 21 blog posts (including this one). With at two solid weeks left and a interesting plan (see below) already laid out, I’ve completed this item to my satisfaction. I did not write a brand new screenplay this year. While I did finish my 70 Days project, I did not use it to write a new screenplay (yet). The next two were NaNoWriMo specific. I didn’t take part this year, however in July and August I did complete hand writing my first complete novel (52,000 words) and I am currently moving this hand-written novel into Scrivener by writing the second draft so it is safe to say points 3 and 4 were completed. Finally the last point may still be completed before the end of the year. I have been tossing around some ideas. If I get the first draft finished I will post it for all to read.

With at least three points completed in 2014 I believe it was a successful year. During the week between Christmas and New Years I will post a list of my 2015 writing goals. I invite each of you to take a moment as tell me your writing goals for 2015 in the comments box below. Although most of us write alone, we are a single community of writers and we obviously like to share our ideas, otherwise we would never publish our work. I look forward to reading your comments.

12 Days of Christmas

It’s coming! Christmas is coming! I’ve decided this year I’m going to do a mini-project called the 12 Tips of Christmas. The first will be posted on December 12, 2014 and run for 12 solid days. Each post will be short as it will just be the tip. I hope you enjoy them.

Have a happy holidays and we’ll talk again before the new year,

Steve
